David Berardi, Mara Lombardi e M. Galuppi, Department of Chemical Engineering Materials Environment (DICMA), Sapienza University of Rome Lucia Calzona, Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, Galleria Borghese, Rome Claudio De Angelis, Fire protection engineer – Former general manager at Italian National Fire Corps – Founding partner at Thik-ing association, Rome Calibrating a water mist extinguishing system in confined spaces is crucial for assessing its performance, but understanding its behavior in terms of safety and property protection remains challenging. This study evaluated the effectiveness of water mist systems in protecting paintings at the Borghese Gallery by comparing onsite tests with numerical simulations. The simulation accounted for cooling effects and heat release, and the model was fine-tuned to match the onsite results. Temperature monitoring was crucial for protecting the artwork. The findings confirmed the system's efficiency and demonstrated that simulations could effectively replace full-scale physical tests for evaluating water mist capabilities.
