Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation (VEMS)

Location: Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre

Inclusions: Morning tea and lunch

Educational activities: 3.5 hours

The technology for simulation-based education is impressive but can represent a barrier to practical scenario delivery. Heavy mannikins, fickle wireless connectivity, audio-visual gear, and clinical consumables (drugs and equipment) can be daunting challenges for even experienced simulation faculty.

In this workshop we will explore an alternative for team training: Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation (VEMS). This simplified approach - laminated patient icons, assessments and ‘treatments’ - is accessible, efficient and a great addition to the simulation practitioners’ toolkit. Research has demonstrated high levels of engagement, sharp focus on teamwork, dramatic feasibility advantages, and less participant confusion than with manikins.

In this session we’ll demonstrate the modality and reflect on how we best design and deliver VEMS to support high performance team training.

GEM Trauma Workshop

Location: Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre

Inclusions: Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea

Care of trauma patients is a cornerstone of emergency medicine, highlighted by systems and teams that ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. Injured older adults have higher mortality, longer intensive care stays, and longer hospital admissions than younger people after adjusting for injury severity score. Even minor trauma for an older person can be associated with functional decline and loss of independence.

This Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) trauma workshop is a must for any EM clinician who looks after injured older adults.

This interactive full-day workshop will:
- Explore EM trauma resuscitation pearls including falls, head, chest and hip injuries
- Provide hands-on skills such as nerve blocks
- Facilitate discussions about the things to consider in the resuscitation bay, like elder abuse, difficult conversations, shared decision-making, and goals of care.

Join us to strengthen your approach to this challenging and important area of emergency care.

Intercultural communication for adaptive emergency medicine practise

Location: Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre

Inclusions: Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea

Educational activities: 8 hours

The workshop takes a developmental approach to increasing skills in recognising and adapting to ‘cultural’ differences: the largely unconscious logic frameworks for communication and other behaviour that humans use in our interactions. Does this person prefer linear or circular communication? Are they acting from a more universal approach to rules or a more situational one?
Differences in these (and more) frameworks lead to frustration, miscommunication and inaction: patients who don’t comply, colleagues who don’t cooperate, displays of anger and frustration that disrupt workplaces where there are significant differences, and more.

Prior to the session, all participants will complete a 15-minute training needs analysis [the Intercultural Development Inventory], the best empirical measure of ‘intercultural sensitivity’ available. Developed by Professors Bennett and Hammer, the Inventory has subsequently been assessed by leading academics in interculturalism, who have consistently found it to be a valid and reliable measure of intercultural sensitivity without age, gender, education or national biases. The session will then be designed specifically for session participants' developmental needs.

Participants will leave with a greater understanding of their own and others’ frameworks, and skills in being able to adapt to others’ expectations/needs to provide for truly patient-centred care (and trainee-centric training) in the ED.

Empowering the next generation of leaders

Location: Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre

Inclusions: Morning tea and lunch

Educational activities: 3.5 hours

Following the success of our previous leadership workshops, AWE has gathered feedback to identify the most pressing challenges facing our members.

This workshop will tackle three critical themes:
1. Accidental Leadership – navigating unexpected leadership roles
2. Imposter Syndrome – overcoming self-doubt and building authenticity
3. Work-Life Balance – juggling leadership with roles as carers, partners, and parents

A thought piece from the Hult International Business School describes the accidental leader as someone who is “given the responsibility but often not the support. Given the title but not the training.” These individuals excel and gradually accumulate responsibilities until they find themselves unexpectedly leading others – often without the necessary support or development.

Many accidental leaders face imposter syndrome despite their successes. Others struggle to balance leadership responsibilities with their personal lives. This workshop aims to address these challenges by providing participants with scientifically-validated support and developmental training, empowering them to lead confidently and effectively.

This interactive workshop will be delivered through a combination of:
• Actionable Exercises – practical activities designed to enhance leadership skills
• Reflective Worksheets – tools for personal growth and self-awareness
• Dynamic Group Discussions – opportunities to share experiences and build supportive networks
